Specialized (non-building) Structure

Specialized (non-building) Element

    Project Requirements:

  • Construction must have been completed after January 2022
  • Construction must be substantially complete before January 2025
  • Projects may be located nationally or internationally
  • At least 80% of the structural design work must have been completed by the firm's office in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia
  • Projects must be designed per the International Building Code (IBC)
  • Limit of one entry per category per firm

Judging Criteria:

Projects will be judged on their overall structural engineering achievement based on the following four criteria:

  1. Technicality - Overcoming technical challenges throughout the life of the project and a design making it stand out in a unique way structurally
  2. Innovation - New and unique ways of addressing constraints and challenges throughout the project going beyond the standards of the building code
  3. Sustainability - Commitment to sustainability through efficient use of materials and labor, resilience, circular economy principles, and/or embodied carbon reduction
  4. Collaboration - Design and construction team collaboration for the successful completion of the project where design aspects were critically influenced by the community
  • Specialized Structures and Specialized Elements:

  • In the past the project category of Specialized (non-building) Structures included both structures and elements of a project. This year, those will be divided up into two different categories.

Specialized Structures are defined as non-building structures that are supported on their own with a designated foundation system and/or are contained within their own project. Examples of Specialized Structures include but are not limited to: pavilions, aqueducts and locks, and sculptures. Pedestrian bridges supported on pier foundations would also be considered a Specialized Structure.

Specialized Elements are defined as elements or parts of a larger building project that demonstrate unique structural capabilities. Examples of Specialized Elements include but are not limited to: monumental staircases, balconies, transfer girders, and structural strengthening. Linking corridors or bridges that connect two buildings would be considered a Specialized Element if it is supported by the buildings on each end and does not have a designated foundation system.
