AI in Practice: A Year of Progress in Structural Engineering & Architectural Design
AIA|DC and SEA-MW are once again bringing together architects, engineers, educators, and technology leaders to explore how AI is reshaping the design and construction professions. Panelists will cover topics from AI-assisted design workflows and architectural education to digital twins and intelligent infrastructure, sharing practical insights into how organizations are moving beyond experimentation to real implementation. Through real-world examples and cross-disciplinary discussion, attendees will come away with a clearer understanding of the opportunities, limitations, and responsibilities that AI brings to the AEC community.

Howard University Student Structural Challenge
We are looking for 8 to 10 volunteers to assist student teams and judge the final results of each phase of the Howard University Student Structural Challenge. SEA-MW, the Howard University ASCE Student Chapter, and the Howard University Steel Bridge Team are hosting an evening of engineering, teamwork, and friendly competition. Students will put their creativity and structural problem-solving skills to the test using Mola Model kits in a three-phase challenge. Help us make this event a success!

Merit Awardee: Specialized Structural Elements
Symphony Park Hotel UHPC Facade Panels
TYLin
The new 147-room Thompson Miami Beach Hotel at Symphony Park features a striking patterned façade that conceals the parking garage while defining the building’s identity. The architect and owner imagined an organic, perforated screen wall that would appear effortless and floating, which traditional precast methods could not achieve in Miami Beach’s harsh hurricane-zone environment. Using computational form-finding, the project team optimized the original pattern into logical load paths and a repeating two-panel rhythm, which reduced the unique molds from ten to three. The team utilized the exceptional material properties and durability of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPC) to achieve ultra-slender 3- and 4-inch panels spanning 17 feet without mid-span supports or additional rebar. The connections were carefully detailed and concealed within the geometry, allowing the façade to appear weightless while meeting demanding structural requirements. The optimization reduced precast material volume by 42%, eliminated unsightly backup frames, and accelerated fabrication and erection. The result is a resilient, efficient, and elegant façade that bridges rendering and reality, advancing both design ambition and structural innovation.
