Good Vibrations? Measuring, Feeling, and Fixing Building Motion

Kick off the program year with SEA-MW! Our interactive September program will provide a practical framework for understanding and evaluating vibration in buildings. Using live demonstrations with seismographs, wired and wireless accelerometers, an active mass damper, and potentially a laser vibrometer, attendees will see how vibration is measured, processed, and interpreted in real time.

Merit Awardee: Structural Renovation $25M to $75M

ELLE

Meyer Consulting Engineers

The Elle represents a pioneering transformation of a mid-century 228,858 SF office building into a modern residential complex, setting a precedent in Washington, DC's “Office to Anything” initiative. Located in the heart of downtown DC, at the intersection of L Street and 20th Street, NW, the nine-story structure—originally built in 1953—has been reimagined into a mixed-use property with 163 residential units with 8,000 square feet of commercial space. The conversion involved a gut renovation of the structure, replacement of the exterior façade, renovation of the two-level underground parking garage, reconfiguration of the roof slab and addition of a penthouse floor. Once a nine-story office building, it is now a 10-story apartment building with a rooftop clubroom, outdoor terrace and a luxury pool. The building is mild-steel reinforced flat plate concrete structure supported on concrete column. Reduction in design live load due to change of use has enabled the Engineer to add a penthouse floor and a roof-top swimming pool above the original roof slab.
