Good Vibrations? Measuring, Feeling, and Fixing Building Motion
Join SEA-MW for our fall kick-off meeting! This interactive program will provide a practical framework for understanding and evaluating vibration in buildings. Using live demonstrations with seismographs, wired and wireless accelerometers, an active mass damper, and potentially a laser vibrometer, attendees will see how vibration is measured, processed, and interpreted in real time. |

Merit Awardee: Structural Renovation Under $25M
Sixty Hotel DC
Greenman-Pedersen, Inc.
Renovation and vertical expansion of an existing five story plus basement office building into a luxury boutique hotel in Dupont Circle. The existing building consisted of a cast-in-place concrete building built in the 1950s and an addition built in the 1980s. The vertical expansion featured two new composite steel-framed levels and a penthouse supported by steel columns. The steel columns were supported by existing concrete columns below. The additional building height and mass necessitated the design and installation of new concrete shear walls and mat foundations to support them. New elevators and elevator pits required the installation of micro piles to temporarily support several existing column footings during excavation and new foundation installation. The existing concrete stair towers were demolished and replaced with new steel framed stairs. An original bank vault within the 1950s era construction, featuring thick concrete walls and slabs, was required to be partially demolished to accommodate the new elevators, and carbon fiber reinforced polymer was required to be installed on several columns. |
